KEY ID FEATURES
- Seems to prefer mountain hemlock and spruce, both in the woods and along trails.
- Medium-to-large fruitbodies with a striking color palette.
- Yellow flesh that quickly stains blue-to-blackish-blue. Simply handling the fuitbody can be enough to evoke a staining reaction.
- Cap convex (wavy in aged specimens), medium-to-large, dry and velvety, color mottled and quite variable - olives, reds and browns – changing in age.
- Pores are deep red-to-orange-red, becoming more orangish in age. Easily stain blue.
- Stem large, thick without reticulation, pointed at base. Yellow accented by oranges and reds. Stains blue.

- NOTES: Cap 53-144 mm across, dry, velvety, becoming glabrous in age. With an olive tone when young, becoming reddish, with darker disc. Pores deep red to orangish-red, becoming more orangish in age, staining blackish-blue. Stipe enlarged downward with a pointed base, Smooth to finely punctate at apex, velvety below.. Flesh yellow, often with red in stipe base; quickly staining deep blue, fading to blackish-blue, to dingy gray over time. Taste mild, mild earthy odor. On edges in mountain hemlock dominated woods with some spruce.
