- Stipe orangish, non-potmarked and without greenish spots. Hollow and snaps like chalk when fresh.
- Fragile or brittle flesh common to members of Lactarius & Russula.
- Injured flesh exudes a bright orange latex that discolors reddish, staining the flesh greenish.
- No distinct odor. Taste slowly and slightly acrid.

Latex bright orange, discoloring reddish, staining the tissue greenish. Growing under spruce, aspen and birch. No odor, taste slowly, slightly acrid.
