Normally growing with conifers along trails or at the tree line of sunny meadows. Also further into the woods. The occasional cosmopolitan specimen will pop-up with planted conifers.
Medium-to-large, sometimes giant, fruitbodies growing solitary or in groups, occasionally in epic proportions.
Cap convex (less so in aged specimens), medium-to-huge, color variable, usually a mottled palette of reds, tans and browns going darker in age. Young buttons can be entirely cream-white.
Pores closed and white when young, turning to yellow, brown, olive and every shade in between with age. Can be pealed off cap.
Stem large, thick with reticulation at the top. White but will take on tan-brownish-golden tones.
Often riddled with fungus maggots (larvae), especially in warmer weather. Common term for this is "blown-out".
