KEY ID FEATURES
- Medium-to-large pored fruitbodies growing solitary or in groups.
- Firm flesh, often rock hard when young. Outer flesh butter yellow, redish-brown near the base. Inner flesh white(ish), rapidly staining blue.
- Typical bolete cap – convex (wavy in age), medium-to-lage, color variable, usually a mottled palette of reds, tans and browns going darker in age.
- Pores butter yellow staining blue transitioning to brown.
- Stem thick, sometimes squat, not reticulate at the top like a King Bolete.
- Taste is usually bitter or unpleasant, hence the generic nickname for the genus "Bitter Boletes".
